Alebrije Art Creation is a collective dedicated to artistic creation at the intersections of performing arts, digital media, and transdisciplinary thought. Their work explores themes of identity, the body, and the environment through hybrid languages that blur the boundaries between reality and fiction, physical and virtual embodiment, performer and audience, memory and emergence.
Founded in 2018 by Ana Baer (MX/US) and Rocío Luna (MX), Alebrije has created digital performance works, video-performance installations, and screendances that have been awarded and showcased across five continents. Their creative approach is grounded in site-specific improvisation, visual metaphor, collaborative creation, and a critical vision of bodies as territories that are culturally, politically, and historically situated.
Alebrije weaves a wide network of artistic collaboration with composers, choreographers, scenic designers, photographers, and artistic thinkers. Notable collaborators include Joaquín López “Chas” and Richard Hall (composers); Natalia Reza, Rosely Conz, Heike Salzer, and Mauricio Nava (performers); Claudia Fragoso (dramaturg); Iván Marín (architect); Eric Sánchez (photographer); as well as festivals such as the Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema and the Festival Internacional de Mujeres y Danza.
Their work has been supported by institutions such as Texas State University (Department of Theatre and Dance, International Studies Fellowship), the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (Academic Body in Performing Arts, Scientific Research Coordination), and Mexico’s Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation.
Recently, they have ventured into participatory art with the project Mirasoles de otoño. Artivism for the Embodied Lives of Women in Fullness, which integrates somatic, expressive, and collective reflection practices with social and community impact, aiming to strengthen self-determined bodily identities among Latina women.
Rocio Luna
Is a creator, researcher, and educator in contemporary dance with over twenty-five years of experience. Her work explores embodied knowledge through site-specific creation, digital media, and live performance encounters.
She is a professor at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo and collaborates internationally with the DEED network and Texas State University. Her artistic portfolio includes more than sixty works—stage pieces, installations, performances, screendance, and immersive proposals—presented worldwide.
Currently, she leads Mirasoles de otoño, an artivist project funded by Secihti, which promotes embodied identity and creative expression among Latina women. Her practice blends aesthetic depth, critical thinking, and social commitment to open pathways for a living, diverse, and transformative dance.
Ana Baer
Is a Mexican video-choreographer based in the United States, internationally active since 1990. Her work centers on dance as a practice of research, exploring collaborative creation, identity, home, roots, and environmental concerns through embodied and somatic approaches. She has received commissions from institutions in Germany, Mexico, and the United States, and is the founder of Avant Media, Merge Dance Company, Intercontinental WeCreate Productions, and Alebrije.
She has served as Artistic Director of the Sans Souci Dance Cinema Festival since 2004. Her training includes the Royal Academy of Dance, the Centro Nacional de las Artes, and the University of Colorado Boulder. She is currently a professor at Texas State University and has taught workshops at universities in Mexico, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
